Lent is Here!
March 2026
The forty days of Lent are taken from Jesus 40 days in
the wilderness after he received baptism by St. John
the Baptist in the Jordan River. This is a time when
we engage in fasting and abstinence. What does this
consist of? Abstinence has been traditionally thought
of as a reduction in the quality of food, while fasting
is a reduction in the quantity of food. Traditionally
fasting might mean giving up a meal or more, while
abstinence would mean giving up a type of food.
Instead of having a “one size fits all rule,” it is better
for each person to examine themselves and decide
what will be more efficacious to give up. Ask
yourself, “what will I really miss?” This of course can
also include drinks. If you ask yourself, “Maybe I’ll
give up X,” and you hear yourself saying, “No I won’t
do that!” It might be a good idea to give that up. If
you have given up the same thing for years, it might
be a good idea to add something to it. One of the
things that can happen is that over the course of Lent
one may discover that what has been given up is not
really missed when Easter comes.
The next part of Lent is about what am I adding to my
spiritual life to help me draw closer to God.
First, write down what your daily/weekly devotional
activity is. What you will come up with is your
personal Rule of Life. Now ask yourself what you
think/feel you need to nourish your relationship with
God now. If you have some thoughts, write them
down. If you don’t have any thoughts about what you
would like to do, write that down too. In either case, it
is important to ask God in prayer, “what he would
have me do to grow closer to HIM now.”
One thing that is good for everybody is to engage in
daily Bible reading. In our Prayer Book,, the Psalms are
divided into 60 sections labeled Morning or Evening
Prayer, day 1 through 30. Remember, the Psalms are
prayers. If you pray the psalms appointed for morning
and evening for a month you will have prayed to God
about all of the most important aspects of human life.
It is very helpful to pray these out loud so that you can
hear your voice. This will slow you down a bit which
is good. Don’t expect every verse to be meaningful,
and it is possible that you will pray verses that speak
to you. When you pray the Psalms, you are joining
millions of people who have been saying these prayers
for the last 30 centuries. In some of the Psalms, there
will be thoughts and feelings that will probably
express what you are experiencing in your life today.
It can be a great comfort to know that God has
inspired these prayers, which give voice to what you
would like to say to HIM.

Join us at St. Paul’s Anglican Church for an evening centered on prayer, reflection, and drawing closer to God through the practice of the Anglican Rosary.
Used by many Anglicans as a devotional prayer practice, the Anglican Rosary offers a gentle rhythm of prayer that helps quiet the mind and open the heart to God’s presence. Through repeated prayer and meditation on Scripture, it invites us to slow down, listen, and rest in the peace of Christ. Many find it to be a meaningful way to deepen their spiritual life and cultivate a daily habit of prayer.
Fr. William Warnky will begin the Saturday evenings with a Q&A at 5:30 PM, sharing the spiritual significance of the Anglican Rosary and answering questions. At 6:00 PM, all are invited to remain as we enter into a time of praying the Anglican Rosary together.
Whether you are new to this form of prayer or simply seeking a quiet space to pray, all are welcome to come and experience this peaceful practice of devotion.
